Dubai (ICC) – Asitha Fernando, a fast bowler for Sri Lanka, was censured for violating the ICC Code of Conduct on the third day of the second Test against Pakistan in Colombo.
According to the ICC Code of Conduct, Level 1 violations include “using language, actions, or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.” Fernando was judged to have violated this level.
The event took place in Colombo on the third day of play when Fernando dismissed Saud Shakeel in order to end their obstinate century stand.
Fernando was considered to have approached the batter after being ejected and improperly celebrated the ejection.
There was no need for a formal hearing because Fernando confessed the wrongdoing and agreed to the punishment suggested by David Boon of the Emirates ICC Elite Panel of Match Referees.
Fernando has now committed his first offense in 24 months, and as a result, his disciplinary record has been updated with one demerit point.
Four or more demerit points accrued during a 24-month period are converted to suspension points, which results in a player’s ban. One Test, two ODIs, or two T20Is are off limits for the player with two suspension points, whichever comes first.
