The summer blockbuster season has officially begun. “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” the latest Marvel Cinematic Universe film, made $185 million in its first weekend in theatres, the most of any film released in 2022.
“Nothing says movie theatres are returning like a Marvel film making a huge debut,” said Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior media analyst. “This is fantastic news for the film industry, audiences, and the upcoming slate of films.”
According to data from EntTelligence, roughly 13.5 million moviegoers viewed “Doctor Strange” over the weekend, making it the second most popular picture since the pandemic began. With 20.6 million viewers on its opening weekend, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” holds the current record.
The picture grossed $265 million internationally, increasing its worldwide total to $450 million.
